The annual Pine Needle Festival was held on Thursday, Feb. 15, at Foothill Elementary School with student performers ranging from first grade to seventh grade in celebration of the performing arts. After the judges and students had entered the gymnasium and settled in, the fun began with third grade teacher Jennifer Bethel welcoming everyone and introducing the three guest judges: Patrick Hansen, Pam Smedley, and Pat Gallegos. The presentations ranged from poetry written by the presenter to poetry written by a known poet. Occasionally the presentation was in song form but mostly the spoken word — accompanied by lots of laughter and applause. The first session had 12 presenters, all Foothill students ranging from first grade to sixth with poem titles such as “Bow Wow Wow, Meow, Meow” and “The Turkey Shot Out of the Oven,” by Jack Prelutsky. The second session had five solo fourth, fifth and sixth grade Big Creek students presenting, while in the duo category there were four Foothill and two Big Creek third, fifth, sixth and seventh graders. One poem, titled, “Ooey Gooey,” by a pre-kindergarten student from Big Creek was “a crack-up.” The third session had four presentations: three from Big Creek, and the closing number, performed by Bethel’s 21 FES third grade students titled “The Wonky Donkey,” by Craig Smith. This performance was fun to watch and listen to. The judges were given guidance directing them to consider “what I heard,” “what I saw,” and “overall impression” in rating the performances. Lunch was called for students and the event was over for the another year. It was enjoyable and lots of fun to watch and listen to. Good job, Ms. Bethel and students! |
